02 — How it works

What does it cost to import a car from Germany?

The German asking price is only the start of the road. These are the stops on the way to Portuguese plates — every car here adds them up for you, with the assumptions shown.

01VAT
Paid once. Used cars are bought with German VAT (or under the margin scheme); nearly-new cars — under six months or 6,000 km — pay 23% Portuguese VAT instead.
02ISV
The Portuguese vehicle tax, from engine size and CO₂ emissions, reduced for the car’s age. Electric cars are exempt; qualifying plug-in hybrids pay a reduced rate.
03Transport
A truck from Germany to your door, or a flight and a long drive. We use a typical transporter price.
04Papers
The customs declaration (DAV), the type-B inspection at an IPO centre and the Portuguese registration (matrícula).

04 — Questions

Importing, explained

Figures are estimates for guidance; confirm taxes with a customs agent before buying.

How much does it cost to import a car from Germany to Portugal?

On top of the German price you pay ISV (from the car’s CO₂ and engine size, reduced with age), transport, the type-B inspection, the customs declaration and registration — and 23% Portuguese VAT if the car is nearly new. ISV is usually the biggest part, so the extras range from under €2,000 for an electric car to many thousands for a large petrol or diesel. Every car on this site shows its own total.

How is ISV calculated on an imported used car?

ISV has an engine-size component and a CO₂ component (Tabela A of the Código do ISV), a surcharge for some diesels, and a reduction for the car’s years of use. Electric cars are exempt, and plug-in hybrids with at least 50 km of electric range and under 50 g/km of CO₂ pay a reduced rate. Our free ISV calculator uses the same rules.

Do I pay VAT twice when I import a used car?

No. A used car — more than six months old and more than 6,000 km — is taxed where you buy it, so there is no Portuguese VAT on arrival. Only nearly-new cars pay 23% VAT in Portugal, and then you buy them without German VAT.

How long does importing take?

Usually a few weeks: transport, the IPO inspection, the customs declaration (DAV) and the registration. Many buyers use a transporter and a customs agent (despachante) to handle the papers.

Is the saving guaranteed?

No. The figures are estimates from advert data. The final VAT and ISV depend on the invoice, the seller’s VAT status and the car’s documents (the COC). Shortlist here, then confirm with a customs agent before you pay.

Do you sell the cars?

No. We link to the original German advert and you deal with the seller directly — or with an import company if you prefer. Searching, saving cars and alerts are free.
